  96. This guy Ciciero that I work with here at Bell Labs is having a party for
  97. his frat at a house in a good part of harlem (near a subway stop) this
  98. Saturday.  No, we aren't invited, but I asked him about the house and it
  99. turns out that whoever owns it rents it out to people to have parties in
  100. it.  Guess how much it costs for the night?  $300.  Cheap huh?  They had
  101. one there this summer that went really well from the way he went off to
  102. me about it.

  105. ...a bar built in...  ...peoples up-n-down da street... people goin
  106. off!  Last until 5 am...  We'

  276. Copies of the daily digests are archived, if you would like a back issue ftp 
  277. to techno.stanford.edu and log in as anonymous.  Give your log name and address 
  278. as the password.  cd to /pub/raves/archives/technopolis and you will see the 
  279. archived files (type ls to see files).  The digests are grouped together in
  280. week-long chunks, identifiable by the date of the Tuesday of the beginning
  281. of the week (for Technopolis' purposes, weeks start on Tuesdays).  So, if you 
  282. want a digest that went out on October 8, 1993, you'd have to get the 
  283. archive named 931005 (for October 5, 1993, the first day of the Technopolis
  284. week in which the digest you want appeared).  If you don't see the one you 
  285. want try to cd into /pub/incoming and look there.  To pick up a file type get 
  286. and the file name.  If you have any trouble using ftp please ask someone at 
  287. your computer center for advice.  If you can't get advice at your computer
  288. center then try mailing the techno.stanford.edu rave ftp administrator at
  289. ambient@techno.stanford.edu.  If you do not have ftp then please mail 
  290. laura@usl.com and specify the date or dates you need.

  366. WE HAVE A CONFIRMED SPACE FOR OUR PARTY!  YIPPEEEE!  
  367.  
  368. Much thanks to Liz Roberts (formerly of  Your Sisters' House in San 
  369. Francisco) for getting it together.  The space sounds great, (Liz 
  370. checked it out in person so it has her seal of approval), it's in our 
  371. budget (i.e. VERY cheap -- $300, and the guy only wants $150 in advance), 
  372. and although the location isn't optimal it's not bad either.  
  373.  
  374. It is an unused theater/club in Rockland County, NY, about 1/2 hour 
  375. north of Manhattan.  There is a bar area that can be used for a smart 
  376. bar.  There is already a sound system in place (we still need 
  377. tables/mixer/monitor, of course, but the "back end" is there).  There 
  378. is plenty of parking and plenty of space -- Liz figures we can have
  379. 1,000 people with no problem.  It's also very near to where Liz lives 
  380. so that will help with the logistics.
  381.  
  382. I'm in the middle of an all-day class so I don't have time to type
  383. more, but I really wanted to get the word out.  There are about 100
  384. things that need to be done, and quickly, and I will get down to
  385. organizing them ASAP.
  386.  
  387. So, as it stands:  Technopolis Party, Saturday January 8, 1993, Rockland 
  388. County, NY 10pm to 8 am.  Don't have a ticket price yet, but I want to 
  389. make this as inexpensive as possible ($5 would be perfect).  Tickets 
  390. will be sold at the door so we don't have to deal with advance purchase 
  391. logistics.  More details will follow as soon as I get out of my class and 
  392. have some time to make some phone calls etc.

  403. keep your eyes out for down there...

  405. Friday night, some friends and I hit a little club near the college of 
  406. Charlston called the Treehouse. I had heard it was one of the top in the 
  407. country, and didn't know why - well, thanks to some intense mixes by 
  408. Jessie James (like the gun fighter), I now know why. The boy is *HOT*.

  410. If you get the chance, check him out someday when you're in the 
  411. neighborhood. He's better than *MOST* of the DJ's I've heard.

  425.         Bob Baxter asks what's up with the Internet Guide.
  426.         OK, several people have come up with the idea that there should be
  427. two guide documents (perhaps three): 1. A flyer/pamphlet with simple
  428. instructions on how to get the guide. 2. The Guide, itself. 3. (Maybe) An
  429. E-mail letter on how to get the Guide. So we will do it that way.
  430.         Although, I have gotten many offers of help and information :)
  431. very few people have made any suggestions on exactly what the contents of
  432. it shall be, or even how extensive a document we should create. If we
  433. really want this thing to happen, let's get going! I want this to be OUR
  434. guide, not "Mark's Guide," so get on your ass and start typing. If not,
  435. let's just forget the whole thing.

  458. over a year ago - the people were really friendly and they hired two
  459. friends of mine to DJ a party there about a year ago.

  578. One of the reasons why the flyers are not ready yet is because we don't
  579. have a DJ list.  I want to give Technopolis DJs first dibs before I
  580. offer slots to other net DJs.  We are going from 10 pm to 8 am, so we
  581. need 10 DJs of a variety of styles and speeds.  If you can commit 100%
  582. to being there on that date ("I can probably make it" doesn't count in
  583. my book) please contact me.  Even if I know you, please refresh my memory
  584. by including a short description of what you are spinning these days.

  586. There is only ONE music area, the space does not lend itself to doing
  587. a chill room.  Also, we want to keep this simple so we will NOT be
  588. having PAs this time around.

  590. We can't promise we'll pay you.  However, we intend to do the following:
  591.  
  592.     1) pay the owner of the space
  593. then
  594.     2) pay off the costs of the flyers
  595. then
  596.     3) pay DJs/VJs/other crew's traveling expenses

  609. smoothly.  To being with, I am looking for people willing to be IN CHARGE
  610. of certain things that need to be done.  As the person in charge of

  624. Vibe Support -- we need people to be available during the party to run
  625.     errands, run messages around, pick up trash that might pile
  626.     up, answer questions, and overall just be good hosts to the
  627.     party goers.

  629. Clean-Up Crew -- at the end of the night we have to clean the place up.
  630.     Hopefully because of the actions of the Set-Up Crew and Vibe
  631.     Support team this won't be as nasty a job as it is at some other
  632.     parties we've been to.

  634. No one would be stuck on a job all night.  The idea is for enough people
  635. to volunteer so you'd only work for at most two hours.

  706. Okay, the DJ list is shaping up nicely.  I want it finalized by Monday,
  707. so if you haven't written to me yet do so.  Just to make sure I get your

  710. What happens next with the DJ list depends on how things look on Monday.
  711. If there are too many DJs, I'll have to arbitrate (sigh, I hope it 
  712. doesn't come to that).  If there are still open slots, I will offer them
  713. to a few net-DJs who *aren't* on Technopolis.  If there are still open
  714. slots after that I will call Heather at Groove and find out who from there
  715. is available that night (with Carlos and Heather being my first choices).

  717. The party is being promoted as featuring "up-and-coming DJs from all over
  718. the NorthEast."  The reason why I'm NOT going for big names is because I
  719. really wanted to give other people, especially in the Technopolis Community,
  720. a chance.  If this means we don't make lots of money, so be it. 
  721.  
  722. But from what I can tell is a LOT of ravers don't really seem to care who
  723. is DJing or even know a lot about what styles each DJ spins.  I kid you not!
  724. I've read so many post-rave discussions where people either couldn't recall
  725. who spun what when, or complaining they didn't like the music when if 
  726. they would have recalled what that DJ is into they might have figured out
  727. they should have avoided the party all together.  Get my drift?
  728.  
  729. Because we are keeping things very simple, we won't need to have very 
  730. many people to break even, so we don't need to worry about bringing in big
  731. name DJs to draw enough of a crowd to make money.  There *ARE* some very
  732. talented people in our community who deserve a chance.  For example, I
  733. was floored by Darshan's set at the FMR we threw in July.  No one's really
  734. heard of him, but I'm SURE people will love him.  My point is that "name 
  735. brand" does not necessarily imply "quality."  I know we're taking a risk 
  736. here, but I really WANT to take that risk.  Especially since we have virtually
  737. NO capitol to get this thing started, and because I'd feel really bad about
  738. having to pick and choose among members of the Technopolis community.

  803. We still need someone to head the Vibe Support group.  This is very important.
  804. You will be responsible for getting a team of people who will be avaiable
  805. (in shifts) to run errands and otherwise support the happiness of the party.
  806. Someone who likes to play host or hostess would be a good head for this
  807. group.  Please write to me if you'd like to volunteer to be the head.

  809. The most important group of all is the breakdown/cleanup group.  There is
  810. no way in HELL I am going to get stuck the next day having to deal with
  811. this all alone :-)  The head of this group needs to get promises from
  812. people that they WILL stay all the way through to the end and WILL help
  813. clean up (including emptying trash and cleaning up the bathroom if
  814. necessary).  So if you want to ensure that Technopolis will get permission
  815. to use the space (or even any space) again, please write to me to
  816. volunteer to be the head.

  966. I went up to the site with Liz last night, as I she lives one mile
  967. from it and I had to take her home anyway.  It is REALLY easy to 
  968. find, no matter if you are coming from NJ, PA, NY, MA, CT, or whatever.
  969. There's lots of parking, and it's right near a gas station and a
  970. supermarket so ravers can get food and fuel if they need it.
  971.  
  972. In all it's about 30 miles from the George Washington Bridge, straight
  973. up the Palisades Parkway into Rockland County.

  1024. appropos/feasible to have some sort of live Internet connection set up
  1025. at the party? the idea of this would be to sort of show people hands-on
  1026. how to access the Net, in addition to providing flyers/The TNP Guide to
  1027. those who are especially interested. Is there a phone connection in the
  1028. party site? Also, we would need someone to watch the computer and be willing
  1029. to show people examples of some of the features/services of the Net such
  1030. as News, Email, Telnet, FTP, Gopher etc (VRAVE!!!!)

  1033. I just thought that this would be a nice side-stall feature to have, and
