Hi all,
Sorry if some people's mail got lost. You see, our gateway at USL
got flakey and I recieved no incoming mail for about three days. Then
I went away for Thanksgiving and so wasn't around to put out the digest.
I'm back . . . and if you have anything that needs to be posted please
send it along!
I took the red-eye back from San Francisco last night -- I feel like
I'm on codeine or something so I'm going to keep this message short.

This isn't directly related to raving , but figured people on the list
might be looking for employment. I received a call from a headhunter
today. She was telling about a position open on Long Island. It's a
technical support position, working with bar code scanning guns. I'm
unsure of the salary, but they offer car expenses. Interested? I'll
hook you up.

This guy Ciciero that I work with here at Bell Labs is having a party for
his frat at a house in a good part of harlem (near a subway stop) this
Saturday. No, we aren't invited, but I asked him about the house and it
turns out that whoever owns it rents it out to people to have parties in
it. Guess how much it costs for the night? $300. Cheap huh? They had
one there this summer that went really well from the way he went off to
me about it.
"No problems with cops, neighbors, etc... ...people on two dance floors
...a bar built in... ...peoples up-n-down da street... people goin
off! Last until 5 am... We'
re getting it for $150 cuz we know the owners, but DJs are costing us $200
...it's gonna be all that!" - Ciciero's comments on the up coming party
I'm going to try to get some more info on this from him. It's a brownstone
home. The neighborhood is ok, so who knows? Maybe this could be a good
spot for a technopolis party.
[ NOTE FROM LAURA: Sure Mars, check it out and get back to us! This sounds
very exciting! ]

Is there anyone on this list that does any computer art? Those of you on

a rave-list shirt for "Direct From Mars" super-fly gear. If you're

Please, when you go to a rave and get flyers try to type them in and send the

processed into the digest.

NOTE: use laura@usl.com for all "business-related" Technopolis traffic. My
other address (at Berkeley) is for personal mail and for mail I send
as a "regular" list member only. Thanks.
________________________________FTP____________________________________________
Copies of the daily digests are archived, if you would like a back issue ftp
to techno.stanford.edu and log in as anonymous. Give your log name and address
as the password. cd to /pub/raves/archives/technopolis and you will see the
archived files (type ls to see files). The digests are grouped together in
week-long chunks, identifiable by the date of the Tuesday of the beginning
of the week (for Technopolis' purposes, weeks start on Tuesdays). So, if you
want a digest that went out on October 8, 1993, you'd have to get the
archive named 931005 (for October 5, 1993, the first day of the Technopolis
week in which the digest you want appeared). If you don't see the one you
want try to cd into /pub/incoming and look there. To pick up a file type get
and the file name. If you have any trouble using ftp please ask someone at
your computer center for advice. If you can't get advice at your computer
center then try mailing the techno.stanford.edu rave ftp administrator at
ambient@techno.stanford.edu. If you do not have ftp then please mail
laura@usl.com and specify the date or dates you need.

telnet techno.stanford.edu 7283
and follow the directions on the login screen. There is a bug in vrave such
that first-time users can't see what they type. To fix it, log out by
typing /qy (don't hit return between the q and the y) and log in again using
the account you just created (i.e. don't go through new again). Once on
vrave, use /? to get a list of all the commmands.

RE: Space for a rave in the city
______________________________________________________________________
Hi all,
WE HAVE A CONFIRMED SPACE FOR OUR PARTY! YIPPEEEE!
Much thanks to Liz Roberts (formerly of Your Sisters' House in San
Francisco) for getting it together. The space sounds great, (Liz
checked it out in person so it has her seal of approval), it's in our
budget (i.e. VERY cheap -- $300, and the guy only wants $150 in advance),
and although the location isn't optimal it's not bad either.
It is an unused theater/club in Rockland County, NY, about 1/2 hour
north of Manhattan. There is a bar area that can be used for a smart
bar. There is already a sound system in place (we still need
tables/mixer/monitor, of course, but the "back end" is there). There
is plenty of parking and plenty of space -- Liz figures we can have
1,000 people with no problem. It's also very near to where Liz lives
so that will help with the logistics.
I'm in the middle of an all-day class so I don't have time to type
more, but I really wanted to get the word out. There are about 100
things that need to be done, and quickly, and I will get down to
organizing them ASAP.
So, as it stands: Technopolis Party, Saturday January 8, 1993, Rockland
County, NY 10pm to 8 am. Don't have a ticket price yet, but I want to
make this as inexpensive as possible ($5 would be perfect). Tickets
will be sold at the door so we don't have to deal with advance purchase
logistics. More details will follow as soon as I get out of my class and
have some time to make some phone calls etc.

I just got in from Charlston, SC yesterday, and have they got a DJ to
keep your eyes out for down there...
Friday night, some friends and I hit a little club near the college of
Charlston called the Treehouse. I had heard it was one of the top in the
country, and didn't know why - well, thanks to some intense mixes by
Jessie James (like the gun fighter), I now know why. The boy is *HOT*.
If you get the chance, check him out someday when you're in the
neighborhood. He's better than *MOST* of the DJ's I've heard.

GUIDE PEOPLE:
Bob Baxter asks what's up with the Internet Guide.
OK, several people have come up with the idea that there should be
two guide documents (perhaps three): 1. A flyer/pamphlet with simple
instructions on how to get the guide. 2. The Guide, itself. 3. (Maybe) An
E-mail letter on how to get the Guide. So we will do it that way.
Although, I have gotten many offers of help and information :)
very few people have made any suggestions on exactly what the contents of
it shall be, or even how extensive a document we should create. If we
really want this thing to happen, let's get going! I want this to be OUR
guide, not "Mark's Guide," so get on your ass and start typing. If not,
let's just forget the whole thing.
Please send in your ideas, comments and suggestions ASAP.
PEACE OUT :)

I think I've been there before.
Is it a co-ed fraternity?
Does it have a pool table down stairs?
Built in bar.
Long distance service disconnected for 2 years?
If it's the place I think it is then I crashed there the night before storm
over a year ago - the people were really friendly and they hired two
friends of mine to DJ a party there about a year ago.
I'd reccomend it too - nice place - close to deli's for food too.

Subject: TNP: DJs
One of the reasons why the flyers are not ready yet is because we don't
have a DJ list. I want to give Technopolis DJs first dibs before I
offer slots to other net DJs. We are going from 10 pm to 8 am, so we
need 10 DJs of a variety of styles and speeds. If you can commit 100%
to being there on that date ("I can probably make it" doesn't count in
my book) please contact me. Even if I know you, please refresh my memory
by including a short description of what you are spinning these days.
There is only ONE music area, the space does not lend itself to doing
a chill room. Also, we want to keep this simple so we will NOT be
having PAs this time around.
We can't promise we'll pay you. However, we intend to do the following:
1) pay the owner of the space
then
2) pay off the costs of the flyers
then
3) pay DJs/VJs/other crew's traveling expenses
then
4) divide up any leftover money among people in accordance
to what they did for the party

We need people to help in MANY areas in order to make the party run
smoothly. To being with, I am looking for people willing to be IN CHARGE
of certain things that need to be done. As the person in charge of
a committee, it will be up to you to work out the details of your task
and to get and schedule people to do them.
Here are the suggested committees that need leaders. If you have any
other committee suggestsion let me know:
Set-Up Crew -- we need people there before the event to help lug DJ
equipment, to help set up tables, maybe to sweep the floor,
maybe to wipe down the smart bar area, whatever.
Door -- we need people to collect money, issue tickets, and act as
security.
Vibe Support -- we need people to be available during the party to run
errands, run messages around, pick up trash that might pile
up, answer questions, and overall just be good hosts to the
party goers.
Clean-Up Crew -- at the end of the night we have to clean the place up.
Hopefully because of the actions of the Set-Up Crew and Vibe
Support team this won't be as nasty a job as it is at some other
parties we've been to.
No one would be stuck on a job all night. The idea is for enough people
to volunteer so you'd only work for at most two hours.

Hi all,

Subject: TNP: Alchemy DJs
Okay, the DJ list is shaping up nicely. I want it finalized by Monday,
so if you haven't written to me yet do so. Just to make sure I get your
email, send it to laura@soda.berkeley.edu AND laura@usl.com .
What happens next with the DJ list depends on how things look on Monday.
If there are too many DJs, I'll have to arbitrate (sigh, I hope it
doesn't come to that). If there are still open slots, I will offer them
to a few net-DJs who *aren't* on Technopolis. If there are still open
slots after that I will call Heather at Groove and find out who from there
is available that night (with Carlos and Heather being my first choices).
The party is being promoted as featuring "up-and-coming DJs from all over
the NorthEast." The reason why I'm NOT going for big names is because I
really wanted to give other people, especially in the Technopolis Community,
a chance. If this means we don't make lots of money, so be it.
But from what I can tell is a LOT of ravers don't really seem to care who
is DJing or even know a lot about what styles each DJ spins. I kid you not!
I've read so many post-rave discussions where people either couldn't recall
who spun what when, or complaining they didn't like the music when if
they would have recalled what that DJ is into they might have figured out
they should have avoided the party all together. Get my drift?
Because we are keeping things very simple, we won't need to have very
many people to break even, so we don't need to worry about bringing in big
name DJs to draw enough of a crowd to make money. There *ARE* some very
talented people in our community who deserve a chance. For example, I
was floored by Darshan's set at the FMR we threw in July. No one's really
heard of him, but I'm SURE people will love him. My point is that "name
brand" does not necessarily imply "quality." I know we're taking a risk
here, but I really WANT to take that risk. Especially since we have virtually
NO capitol to get this thing started, and because I'd feel really bad about
having to pick and choose among members of the Technopolis community.

Just so you know, three people have offered use of 4 phone lines for

I'm not sure how Jenn and Sprockett are going to handle their lines,
as I am perfectly willing to trust them to use their own good judgement,
but this is what Ed is putting on his line, just so you'll know.
"Hi, you have reached the Technopolis phone line. Please join us
Saturday, January 8, for ALCHEMY. The location is in Rockland
County, NY, about 1/2 hour north of Manhattan. Ticket price is
$7, and tickets will only be sold at the door. ALCHEMY will
feature up-and-coming DJs from around the north east, plus a
smart bar by Liquid Technology and visuals by MelonDezign.

Mark ( 0005995366@mcimail.com) is the head of our security group for
the Alchemy party.
He's had a lot of club-running and security experience handling things
at a club called Anthrax (did I get that right? or did you mean you
did security for the BAND????).
Anyway, Bob Baxter ( who's email address currently escapes me ) will be
working with Mark, the two of them putting their bulk and attitudes to
good use (heee).
They need more help, though. We haven't established how far we want to go
in terms of checking bags and stuff . . . but if you feel you could deal
with that sort of thing, and handling upset tripped out people if necessary,
please contact Mark about working with him.
It seems that EVERYONE wants to be on the set-up committee. We really can't
do things that way, set-up is actually the LEAST of our worries. Please
consider volunteering for something other than set-up. No one will have to
work more than two hours if enough people volunteer.
Again, contact Mark DIRECTLY, don't write to me for this one, I have a lot
of other things to worry about.

We still need someone to head the Vibe Support group. This is very important.
You will be responsible for getting a team of people who will be avaiable
(in shifts) to run errands and otherwise support the happiness of the party.
Someone who likes to play host or hostess would be a good head for this
group. Please write to me if you'd like to volunteer to be the head.
The most important group of all is the breakdown/cleanup group. There is
no way in HELL I am going to get stuck the next day having to deal with
this all alone :-) The head of this group needs to get promises from
people that they WILL stay all the way through to the end and WILL help
clean up (including emptying trash and cleaning up the bathroom if
necessary). So if you want to ensure that Technopolis will get permission
to use the space (or even any space) again, please write to me to
volunteer to be the head.
Don't write to me if you want to be *on* these committees, just write to
me if you'd like to organize them. Thanks.

Subject: TNP: cashier/ticket committee
Fluid (brit@brahms.udel.edu ) will be the head of the ticket/cashier
group. These are the people who actually take the money at the door.
We won't be staffing the door all night, I think Liz and I decided that
we'd need two people ( in shifts, of course ) until like 2 am, then
maybe 1 person until 4, and then no one after that. Or something like
that. Anyway, if you can count money and make change, please consider
contacting Fluid. Oh Fluid, Liz has a friend who will definately be helping
you during the initial opening "press" of people, so you've got at least one
person already. Liz's friend isn't on the net, though, but that's not a
problem.

Subject: TNP: setup committee
The set-up committee has a head, it is Phil Zampino ( zampino@panix.com ).
This committe doesn't need many people, as Liz, Phil, Will, Ed, Eileen,
Tom, Jake, Jenn, etc. will all be there at the beginning. So, please
consider working on some other committee.
Of all the mail I've been getting it seems everyone wants to be on the
setup committee. This isn't going to work -- SOMEONE's got to do the
things that will keep the party running smoothly once we open the doors
at 10pm.
However, if setup is the ONLY thing you can committ to (and you should
plan to be there at 6.00 PM on the night of the event) then please
contact Phil to see if he still needs people.

These will be printed in black on colored cardstock, and will be as small
as possible (like 16 to an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet). There will be a sort of
alchemy/gothic/mystic-looking symbol on the front, too.
The REAL flyers will come next week. These will also be small (like 4
to a sheet) and will be printed in black on 100% recycled paper (not
sure what color). Stay tuned for details. Liz, Phil, and I will be
working on the real flyers, so if you have any SIMPLE but EFFECTIVE
ideas, please email me privately.

Hi all,
Oh god I am so tired. Driving to Virginia and back in the rain
takes a lot out of you.
I went up to the site with Liz last night, as I she lives one mile
from it and I had to take her home anyway. It is REALLY easy to
find, no matter if you are coming from NJ, PA, NY, MA, CT, or whatever.
There's lots of parking, and it's right near a gas station and a
supermarket so ravers can get food and fuel if they need it.
In all it's about 30 miles from the George Washington Bridge, straight
up the Palisades Parkway into Rockland County.
*This* *is* *really* *going* *to* *happen*!!!!!
If ANYONE wants to organize a bus trip, send me email with your "name"
(i.e. whatever you call yourself :-) and the contact number for the
bus info. We are making the flyers Tuesday night, so I will need the
info by Tuesday afternoon. Again, to avoid network flakieness, please
email to both laura@usl.com and laura@soda.berkeley.edu .

Hey: Not to burst anyone's bubble, but what provisions, if any should be
taken in the event of a major snowstorm on January 8th? Would the party
be postponed? Would we lose the deposit on the location? Hazardous
transportation ... if a blizzard hits, there ain't no way I'm going to
be able to make it to Rockland County.
[ NOTE FROM LAURA: If there is a blizzard, then there is a blizzard. I
suppose in that event we'd have to cancel the party. There is a
strong chance I will be moving to California 2 days after the party, so
if you all decide our backup plan should be to re-schedule, then it
will be up to you all to handle the logistics. When I go up to pay
the guy the deposit I will ask him about cancellation policy. If it
ends up that I lose the $150 out of my own pocket, then so be it. ]

Hi friends,
Seeing as the major details of the Technopolis::Alchemy party are coming
together, i had a little fishy thought that i wanted to cast out on the
net. Since one of the underlying objectives of this party is to inform
people of what Technopolis is, what it means etc. etc. would it be
appropos/feasible to have some sort of live Internet connection set up
at the party? the idea of this would be to sort of show people hands-on
how to access the Net, in addition to providing flyers/The TNP Guide to
those who are especially interested. Is there a phone connection in the
party site? Also, we would need someone to watch the computer and be willing
to show people examples of some of the features/services of the Net such
as News, Email, Telnet, FTP, Gopher etc (VRAVE!!!!)
I realize that we have a 1000 other more pressing things to work out, but
I just thought that this would be a nice side-stall feature to have, and
would offer a unique flavor to our party, showing people that technology
and computers really do belong in the rave scene, and they're not just
for nerdy technoids.
- looking forward to this party, FiSH
[ NOTE FROM LAURA: A vrave hookup would be great. When I go up to the
site I will see if there is a phone line we can use. We also need
someone who has a LOCAL dial-up number in Rockland County for us to
use so we won't have to deal with working out paying the site owner for
the phone charges. So, if you have a local dial-up number in Rockland
where you can get to your account, let me know!!!!! ]

Joe (Fiend) has volunteered to organize the cleanup crew, and is now
looking for people who will promise to stay and help. You should
contact him at 6ANTHONY_M@spcvxa.spc.edu if you are one of these
people.
Reminder: Contact Fluid (brit@brahms.udel.edu) for cashier/tickets help
and Mark (0005995336@mcimail.com) for Security/door help.
Thanks everyone!
